Discover Match

Walking into Match for the first time felt like stepping into a neighborhood spot that already knew my order. Located at 98 Washington St, Norwalk, CT 06854, United States, this diner-style restaurant blends casual comfort with thoughtful cooking, and that balance shows up in everything from the menu layout to how the staff checks in without hovering. I’ve eaten here on rushed lunch breaks and slow weekend evenings, and the experience stays consistent in the ways that matter most: food quality, timing, and a relaxed, welcoming vibe.

The menu reads familiar at first glance, but spending a few minutes with it reveals the care behind each dish. You’ll see classic American diner staples alongside seasonal plates that rotate based on ingredient availability. During one visit last fall, a server explained how they adjust certain recipes depending on local produce deliveries, which lines up with broader industry data from organizations like the USDA that show fresher ingredients retain more nutrients and flavor. That attention to sourcing isn’t just talk. You can taste it in the texture of the vegetables and the balance of seasoning across dishes.

One real standout for me has been the brunch service. I came in with a group of coworkers after a late meeting, and everyone ordered something different. No plate felt rushed or slapped together. The eggs were cooked exactly as requested, the hash had a crisp exterior without being greasy, and the portions made sense. According to National Restaurant Association reports, consistency is one of the top factors driving positive diner reviews, and this place clearly gets that right. Even when the dining room fills up, the kitchen doesn’t cut corners.

Service here deserves its own mention because it reflects real experience, not scripted hospitality. On one visit, I asked about dietary adjustments, and instead of a vague answer, the server walked me through how a dish is prepared and what could be swapped. That level of transparency builds trust, especially since the CDC emphasizes clear communication around food handling and allergens as a key safety practice. It’s reassuring to see those principles applied in a real dining environment, not just mentioned on a website.

Reviews from locals often mention how comfortable the space feels, and that tracks with my experience. The layout works whether you’re grabbing a quick solo meal or settling in with friends. Noise levels stay manageable, and tables aren’t crammed together. I’ve overheard first-time guests say feels like a place you could come back to every week, which sums it up well. There’s no pressure to rush, but you’re never left waiting unnecessarily either.

What also stands out is how the restaurant fits into the surrounding locations nearby. Being right in Norwalk’s walkable area means you’ll see a mix of regulars and new faces, which keeps the atmosphere lively without feeling chaotic. From a professional standpoint, that kind of steady foot traffic is often a sign of strong community trust, something hospitality experts frequently point to as a marker of long-term success.

There are limitations worth noting. Parking can be tight during peak hours, and while the menu offers variety, extremely niche diets may require some flexibility. Still, the staff is upfront about what they can and can’t accommodate, which matters more than overpromising. Overall, the experience reflects solid food practices, informed sourcing, and genuine care for guests, making it easy to understand why this spot keeps earning positive reviews from people who value both comfort and quality in a diner setting.

  • I went mid-week and had lovely dinner. Delicious meal, beautiful lighting and ambiance and a noticeably attentive staff. I will definitely add this gem to a great date night restaurant!

  • Not my first time here and from the moment we walked in we the staff was attentive. We went early, had reservations and were given options for seating which was great as it was extremely cold out. We were greater by our waitress who was very attentive and gave excellent food suggestions for the others in the party who have not eaten there before. We started off with the crispy Brussels which were very good and also had sweet potatoes mashed, mushrooms and pomegranate. This combo works well and was a nice starter. Our meals were the spicy sausage pizza which is thin crust, around 14 in and made in a firewood oven. The gnocchi bolognese with ricotta was recommended and excellent. I ordered the burger and this is how I gauge a true chef as I never have luck with the burger coming out correctly. This place nailed it as the beef was juicy, flavorful and cooked perfectly! The Vermont cheddar, bacon and sautéed onion were a good combo. If I had one suggestion it would be when asked how you would like your burger cooked not stating “grey, pink or red” as the word grey (brown?) when referring to beef turns me away. We finished the meal off with the apple crumble and that didn’t disappoint either. I will say again I loved the waitresses honestly when handing the bill and stating that the 20% gratuity was added in and this started at the time of COVID. Again this is over and I tried to talk to her she really didn’t want to hear it, said take it up with management and walked away (only negative about her response) and times are changing. I am suggesting 15%-20% would be more tasteful. She did offer to remove it which again I will state she was worth more than 20% before the bill and walking away after the above comment. 3 people, no alcohol, food ,2 sodas, gratuity and tax came to $124.

  • My daughter and her husband have been coming to Match for years. This was my first time and it was great. The Carpetbaggers are amazing. My grandson loves the grilled octopus. I'll definitely be back

  • Loved this place. The appetizers are big enough for a meal; almost the same size as the entrees. The grilled octopus was absolutely unbelievably good. Service was prompt and attentive. No cheap by any means, but worth the price. No wait, but then we tend to go off hours.

  • We have been looking forward to eating here for months. My husband grew up in West Port, and we were looking for somewhere new and snazzy to get reservations when we visited this week. The best thing about this place is the food, but before I share those details I want to brag on the staff. From the moment we walked in, we were treated with so much professionalism and kindness, as well as enthusiasm and expertise. They have really great wait staff, hosts, etc. Everyone we interacted with provided the highest level of service. The wine list is impressive and I was thrilled to find a super Tuscan at a reasonable price on the menu (it was insanely good!). But the food is the real star here. These dishes were just incredible. Flavor was intense, seasoning was perfection, and the temperature was exactly on point. I would not have changed one thing. I highly recommend the chicken entree. The restaurant itself is spotlessly clean and we got great seats by the windows up front, which were perfect for people watching the street traffic. The place has a nice vibe of contemporary decoration mixed with functional classics. I do have to note that in other cities, I have paid 2-3 times the price for a meal of this caliber. The pricing of the menu is so reasonable. This is great food, at a great price, in a beautiful atmosphere, being prepared and served by very talented foodies. It was an amazing date night spot.

  • ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Match Restaurant – Consistency Perfected I travel the country for a living, dining in restaurants of every style and caliber, but Match continues to be one of the few places that never misses the mark. The consistency here is something truly special — it’s what sets Match apart in a time when most restaurants seem to lose their touch after a few years. Every visit feels like a reminder of what fine dining should be: outstanding service, beautifully crafted dishes, and flavors that deliver every single time. The value for the quality of food is exceptional — you’re getting top-tier dining without the pretense or inflated price tag. Match is the kind of restaurant that always puts a smile on my face and makes me proud to call it a local favorite. No matter how many cities I visit, this gem keeps me coming back home.
